Snow – 2-13-12

13 02 2012

Woke up to this winter wonderland this morning. Had to take the trash to Norfork for the garbage man and decided to go fishin’.

The white “pipe” coming out of the dam is part of the minimum flow update. Will be interesting to see what they do with it.

It snowed this much while I was at the dam.

It was still snowing pretty hard when I left.

Trip Report 2-2-12 – Shad Kill!

2 02 2012

David and I hit the the Fork today with our new “friend” Dennis. Dennis is a seasoned fly fisherman and is even teaching a tying class tonight in Mt. Home. We were nice enough to take Dennis downriver and he was nice enough to put the “beat-down” on us! Actually we all had a pretty good day. Midges, midge emergers, sowbugs, etc.

There was a shad kill taking place, The fish were not keying on them but it should just be a matter of time.

Arkansas or Alaska?

13 01 2012

Gail and I just got back from a few days in AR. We wondered if we were in AK part of the time. The wildlife came out to play (eat).

First Trip of the Year! Norfork Dam 1-3-2012

3 01 2012

SWPA said the water would be off at 10 a.m. and they were right on the money. Funny thing was I was the only one in the parking lot when they went down.

Called Jack, we had planned on fishing the Ackerman Access, but opted for the dam. The fish were everywhere but they were picky, that is…

Until Don showed up. Don is a fish catching machine. His s Bug is a sho nuff killer. He was gracious enough to give me several and I too began to look like an ole’ pro.

Here’s a nice bow I got earlier.

28 12 2011

Here’s a picture I forgot to post of the Buddy, Lake, Carter and the fish they caught (and cleaned by themselves) when they were deer hunting.

I am in AR for the coming of the New Year and made it out fishing the last two days. I did the Ackerman walk in access on Tuesday and did fair. These area couple of pics from the stabilization work they are doing.

Put in at the dam Wednesday and did better than Tuesday Fished from the bottom of the Long Hole almost to Ace-In-The-Hole. They are also doing some work just past Gene’s.

Fish of the day.

Confluence 11/10/11

11 11 2011

Fished the Confluence yesterday 11/10 and dis pretty good considering the wind was blowing hard right down the river. Did better down rather than up. This is the first fish of the day.

This is the first fish of the day swimming away!

Aso fished the Ackerman access in the afternoon. SWPA predicted shut off at 11 and back on at five. So they shut down at noon  and started back at 3 p.m. Got to fish about and hour and it was good.

Fall is here!

24 10 2011

Gail and I rolled in after church Sunday (getting to be pretty a regular thing.) Had a little rain in MS but bright and beautiful in AR. The leaves are just starting to turn and the temps are 5o’s – 70′s. David and Janis are coming up Wed.

Some pics from the house.

The ran 2 units from 6 a.m. until 8 a.m. So I headed out about 9 and ran into this below Gene’s. They are doing some bank stabilization and it muddied up the river pretty good.

Still got a few on the booger and the midge.

Back at it today. Got this bad boy on a hopper!

More wwork on the Fork. At Cook’s island.

Looking downriver from the middle of Cook’s.

Looking upriver from Cook’s.

Hauling a load!

Sept. 27 -29 and Oct. 3-7

7 10 2011

We held our annual Trout Retreat from Monday, Sept. 27 – 29. Had some low water on the Fork and also fished the Confluence.

Tim Thomas (below) made his second trip to AR and had a great time. Tim is due for knee replacement surgery in Nov. so we made sure to pray for him during our devotion times. Tim has the “G” as far as fishing goes so he caught on to the trout thing pretty quick.  David (my brother) and I did fair and certainly had a good time. Our bait fishing contingent were able to provide supper on Monday night. I know trout may not be the best  “pan fair” but when Mike Weldon puts on the grease you end up with something that would rival the Waldorf Astoria. Looking forward to next year already.

Oct. Alright I don’t like using a net. But seeing that this was my brother-in-law Ian’s second time to trout fish and his first fish of the day. About a 17 inch cutt.

Earlier in the week David and I fished with our friend Mike from St. Louis. Had low water until about 11 on Tuesday and 9 on Wednesday. Mike and I both got a nice cutt on Tuesday. The fishing has been superb. Woolies, soft hackles, scuds, you name it they were buying. We have been pleasantly surprised by the lack of crowds. That is a one of the advantages to having a boat.

Big Brown 8/24/11

24 08 2011

Bro. and I took a couple of hours off today and went fishin. We had been informed that the “hopper” bite was on. It was a bit slow for us. Had a couple of takers but no hook ups until we got this one. Over twenty inches. They have been generating around the clock on the White starting up early on the Norfork so we haven’t been able to wade so we have been “working” around the place.

Friday, August 5, – Saturday, August 13, 2011

14 08 2011

Gail and I had a great week! We headed out on Friday the 5th and spent the night in Houston. The main purpose for our going was to participate in “The Response” a day of prayer called for by TX governor Rick Perry and the AFA. We made our way to Reliant Stadium about 8 a.m. The worship time was great and the times of prayer were just what was needed. We stayed until about 4 p.m. About 30,000 people were in attendance and we are hopeful that our time together will have an impact on our country. Unfortunately we left our camera at the motel so we have no pictures. There are some videos at http://theresponseusa.com/

Of course the icing on the cake was after the vigil we got to see Josh, Kati, Marion and Eliza Jane!

We had planned on going to AR from TX but on Thursday an elderly lady who used to attend Trinity passed away and we returned to Jackson so I could conduct her funeral service Monday.

So we left for AR after the funeral. They were running a lot of water on the rivers the first few days so we did some work around the house and took it easy. Also bought a box blade and bush hog for the tractor. Spent Thursday working on the driveway. Friday the Norfork was off until 11 a.m. so I was out bright and early and managed about 25 to hand, had many more hook ups. Mostly rainbows like these two.

Had the privilege of doing a baby dedication at Cruger this morning (Sunday) and so we have had a glorious week!
